Lolita fashion is, quite contrary to it's bookbased namesake, a very innocent and elegant fashion that developed in Japan. Lolita can be elegant, sweet, dark, romantic and fairytale-like, depending on which substyle you're looking at. Those substyles are united by a common aesthetic: Modesty, doll-like beauty and plenty of frills!
Lolita is inspired by a bunch of different historical fashions, from rococo to victorian and 50's fashion. Popular belief has it that it developed in the 80's as a rebellion against the strict gender roles that young japanese women wanted to stand up against.
